For many people who are deaf or have hearing loss or tinnitus, the workplace can present communication challenges that make daily tasks more difficult than they need to be. The good news? The UK government’s Access to Work scheme exists to remove those barriers. If you need communication support, assistive technology, or other adjustments to thrive in your job, this grant could make a real difference.
What Is Access to Work?
Access to Work is a government-funded programme designed to help people with disabilities or health conditions get into work, stay in work, or return to work. It provides financial support for practical adjustments that go beyond what an employer is legally required to provide as “reasonable adjustments.”
For people who are deaf or have hearing loss or tinnitus, this can include:
Communication support for meetings
Assistive listening devices
Technology such as loop systems
Other tools that help you perform your job effectively
Importantly, the grant does not need to be repaid and does not affect other benefits.
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible for Access to Work if:
You’re 16 or over
You have a disability or health condition that affects your ability to work
You have a paid job, or you’re about to start or return to one
Support is tailored to your individual needs. However, you may not qualify if you already receive certain other benefits. For full eligibility details, we recommend checking GOV.UK site.
How to Apply
Where you live determines how you apply:
England, Scotland, and Wales
You can apply online through GOV.UK.
Civil Servants
If you work in the civil service, your employer—not Access to Work—will provide the support you need.
Strengthening Your Application: The Health Adjustment Passport
RNID recommends completing a Health Adjustment Passport with your employer. This document helps outline the support you need and can make the Access to Work process smoother.
